When Smartwool decided to move their offices out of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, two soon-to-be-former employees met with another Steamboat Springs resident to figure out their next steps. Robin talks about how, out of that meeting, the idea to create better quality and more sustainably sourced winter clothing for kids was conceived. She also reflects on how a company that started in March 2020 (the beginning of the Covid shutdowns) was able to not just persevere, but to grow in four short years into a brand that is now recognized one of the top children’s winter apparel makers by TIME.

Words about the Steamboat Community from Robin Hall…

As you mentioned, all these Steamboat entrepreneurs make me smile so massively. They’re the coolest people that just have a sense of community and passion in their veins. And it’s really special to be a part of. I think this community is incredibly supportive.

The people here are all about helping each other be better, whether it’s in an outdoor endeavor or whatever. Whether it’s helping them be the best florist in town or it’s who’s going to snow blow the best driveway on the street. I mean, we’re all about this healthy competition in town.

Just look at something like what Bill and his team have done at Big Agnes. It’s a beautiful thing. It’s become a badge of honor to travel around the world and use your Big Agnes tent and hear people comment “I love that brand.” And to be able to reply “Well, that’s from my hometown.” You know, it becomes a source of pride too, because we’re three hours from anything and what we can pull off as a community here is pretty cool.
