Mental Health in Routt & Moffat Counties
Suicide is a critical issue in Routt and Moffat County. The Rocky Mountain region has the highest suicide rate in the country and is often referred to as the “suicide belt”. This alarming statistic highlights the severity of the problem we face locally.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals aged 10-44, underscoring the vulnerability of our youth and young adults. On the Western Slope, the suicide rates can be up to three times higher than the overall rate for Colorado, reflecting the unique challenges and pressures faced by our communities.
In 2023, the Yampa Valley experienced the tragic loss of 10 individuals to suicide. Already in 2024, we have lost 8 more lives between Routt and Moffat County. This trend is deeply concerning and emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive suicide prevention efforts.
Event Impact
REPS’ Youth & Adult Counseling program serves all people, regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or documentation status. We are committed to providing inclusive, non-discriminatory support to everyone in our community, ensuring that all individuals have access to the mental health resources they need.
To combat the ongoing suicide crisis in Routt and Moffat County, REPS has been actively providing crucial support and resources to those in need. In 2024, REPS offered free and confidential counseling to 411 people, resulting in approximately 1,726 counseling sessions. This essential support, valued at around $163,000, was made available to anyone in our community, highlighting the significant role that REPS plays in addressing mental health and preventing suicide.
